Google Analytics and DotNetNuke

Google have launched a free web based analytics service for tracking the visitors to your website.

From Google: Google Analytics tells you everything you want to know about how your visitors found you and how they interact with your site. You'll be able to focus your marketing resources on campaigns and initiatives that deliver ROI, and improve your site to convert more visitors.

Google Analytics can also provide Adwords ROI analytics, which I'm sure will prove an essential tool for anyone who implements Adwords.

Currently Google has suspended new sign ups as demand was so high for their service they could not cope with the load on their servers.

I was lucky enough to sign up for the service when it was first launched and I have to say it provides very professional, easy to use and informative reports.

To add Google Analytics to your website all you have to do is add a line of Javascript code into the Head section of your pages. There are several ways to do this in DotNetNuke which I will explain at another time, but it is a simple process.

The reporting features are impressive and they are especially useful for tracking which pages attract visitors and which pages lose visitors - essential information to provide a good service to your website visitors.

I've also noticed that since implementing this that Google has now indexed 12,100 pages from my site - a few days previously it had indexed 782 pages.

From the analytics and the high number of indexed pages listed here, it raises a few issues which I have just become aware of, and that is the potential dupliacte content that can be created from the Terms, Privacy, Register, and Login links within DotNetNuke.

I've noticed from the analytics pages that some visitors actually come into the site through these links and then immediately exit - this is of course very bad... - but at least I am now aware of the problem and something can be done to fix it.

- I've just completed an interview with Jeff Smith from Venexus Incorporated discussing SEO for DotNetNuke which covers this duplicate content issue and solutions. - This will be released in Decemeber in DNN Creative Magazine

Overall, very impressed and definitely worth checking out. - But what will Google do with all of this data ? . . . . .

Tutorial: How to add the Snowcovered.com RSS feeds and earn a 10% referral bonus

I thought you would be interested in this sneak preview of a free tutorial from issue 4 of the magazine…

As most of you will know, Snowcovered.com sell DotNetNuke® related products from Module and Skin developers. Snowcovered.com also provide a 10% referral bonus scheme. If one of your website visitors clicks on a link to snowcovered.com and makes a purchase, you receive 10% of the customer sales.

Following a request, Snowcovered.com agreed to create some RSS feeds so that I could easily display their latest products on DNN Creative Magazine and receive a 10% commission on sales.

Displaying an RSS feed on your website means that as soon as Snowcovered.com performs an update to their website, the updates are automatically added to the RSS feed, meaning that you can display the latest products, or top ten sales without having to do any work.

This free tutorial demonstrates how to add your own referral ID to the RSS feed that Snowcovered.com provide and how to display this feed on your own website.

This tutorial uses the free News Feeds (RSS) core module. You do not need to purchase any modules to set this up.

If you are using the Orizonti Nuke Feeds module, there are also templates at the end of this tutorial especially for Nuke Feeds.
